Bordetella avium is a Gram-negative, no fermentative, strictly aerobic, motile bacterium from the genus Bordetella. Bordetella avium is mainly responsible for the animal disease bordetellosis in wild and domesticated birds. This highly contagious microorganism colonizes the trachea of the host, usually chicken and turkeys. Is easily transmitted by direct contact or though air, water or fecal matter.
Please submit a trachea rubbed swab. The swab should be placed into a Ziploc bag and sent to our laboratory.
